Sunday Accident on Main Street in Matawan Closes Road For Several Hours

The section of Main Street was closed until about 2:30 a.m. Monday, police say.

Main Street between Route 34 and New Brunswick Avenue was closed Sunday afternoon after a car crashed into a utility pole, according to Matawan Sgt. Thomas Falco.

At about 1:18 p.m. on Feb. 24, police responded to the one-vehicle accident and found that a 2005 Subaru Outback was driving north when it left the roadway, struck a utility pole and fractured it at its base.

An employee from a local service station was test-driving the car after performing mechanical work, Falco explained. The driver told police that his foot slipped off of the brake pedal and he looked down to check the floor area when he ran off the roadway.
