Matawan PD Pursues Stolen Car in 30 Minute Chase

Police say speeds exceeded 90 mph

Matawan Borough Police, along with Old Bridge Township Police and NJ State Police, pursued a stolen vehicle through Matawan, Old Bridge and the Garden State Parkway today, Aug. 25 shortly after 11 a.m.

According to Matawan Lt. Ben Smith, the pursuit began on Route 34 north when Officer Brian Murphy attempted to stop a two-door, gray Acura that had been reported stolen by the Orange Police Department.

The car was pursued from Route 34 north through Old Bridge along backroads to the Garden State Parkway southbound entrance at exit 120, Lt. Smith said.

Police pursued the car to approximately exit 105, where the driver then cut across the grass divider and began driving on the northbound side of Garden State Parkway.

Due to the heavy rain, the thirty minute pursuit was terminated near exit 123 northbound to protect the safety of other drivers.

Lt. Smith said the car was traveling between 90 and 100 mph.
