Lil' Wayne Fans Cause Commotion at Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station

They arrived by train, planning to board a bus bound for the Lil Wayne concert at Holmdel's PNC Arts Center.

NJTransit police had to summon help from the Aberdeen Township and Matawan Borough police departments Tuesday night to deal with a rambunctious crowd of young people trying to board a bus bound for the Lil' Wayne concert at the PNC Arts Center.

The call for backup, describing "large crowds of disorderly people," went out shortly after 7 p.m. as commuters were arriving at the Aberdeen-Matawan station, according to police.

The regular commuters were greeted by the sight of more than a dozen police officers, trying to corral more than 100 young people who had gotten into a pushing and shoving match after arriving at the station to await bus transportation to the arts center.

According to Matawan Lt. Ben Smith, the crowd became irate and impatient due to the lack of available buses. Aberdeen Chief of Police John Powers described the crowd as "unruly" and said the extra officers were called to assist with crowd control.

Neither department reported any arrests.

The Matawan side of the parking lot was littered with discarded plastic cups and police were seen writing summonses and threatening arrests. One young man was written up for urinating on the wall of the old station building.

After surging toward a single school bus that pulled into the Matawan lot shortly after 7 p.m., the crowd was forced back onto the sidewalk by police. One young woman unsuccessfully tried to get a ride to the arts center from an arriving commuter, offering $40.
