The 'Be Prepared' Checklist
There are several steps Aberdeen and Matawan residents can take before disaster strikes.
The "Be Prepared" Checklist was prepared by the Aberdeen Township Office of Emergency Management and distributed at the emergency preparedness meeting on July 25.
The following steps are suggested before a disaster like Sandy strikes again.

1. Drinking water for everyone for several days.
2. Flash lights with extra batteries

3. Smoke Alarm and Carbon Monoxide detector with extra batteries
4. Extra batteries should the new ones with 10 years shelf life
5. If you use an electric generator be careful where and what you attach the power cord to. Make sure to use a heavy-duty power cord.
6. Be sure not to place a gasoline generator near an open door or window.
7. Never bring a gasoline engine into a house, garage or basement
8. Make sure you keep gas tanks away from your home.
9. Do not fill with gasoline while the generator engine is hot or running.
10. Have a first aid kit in the house at all times
11. Have all prescriptions and medicine available and enough for extra days
12. Have a fire extinguisher handy and make sure you know how to use it
13. Have several flashlights, use battery-operated candles. Make sure you have plenty of batteries for your flashlights and candles.
14. Have a battery operated radio or a hand crank one and NOAA weather radio with tone alert and extra batteries.
15. Small amount of cash on hand for necessities.
16. Hand held tools.
17. Non-perishable foods for five days and a manual can opener.
18. Do not bring flammable liquids into the home.
19. Make sure your cell phone is charged.
