Firefighters and their immediate family members may qualify for up to $600 a year toward tuition.
Matawan's volunteer firefighters and their families can now qualify for up to $600 a year in tuition credits. According to a resolution passed unanimously by the council on May 7, the borough hopes that participation in the state tuition credit program will help encourage people to step up as volunteers as well as retain current firefighters. The volunteer tuition credit program is an incentive provided by the state of New Jersey to volunteer emergency responders and their immediate family members, such as a spouse or a dependent child. The tuition credits can be used at county colleges, county vocational schools or county technical schools. Each volunteer is eligable to receive up to $600 per year toward an education. Although the …

The township officially marked their move to solar power Tuesday night.
It was about four years ago when a light went off in the minds of the Township Council and the Aberdeen Green Team: working together, they could save money and better the environment by going solar. Since the seeds of that idea were planted, the project has blossomed in to a power purchase agreement (PPA) between Aberdeen and Nexus Energy Solutions, with solar powers installed at no cost to the township at five locations, according to Mayor Fred Tagliarini. Although the solar panels began operating on April 25, the township officially marked the completion of the project on Tuesday with a ceremonial flick of a large power switch between two solar panels. "It's been a thrill to see this project come from conception to reality," Tagliarini …

Water distribution samples now contain below the maximum contaminent level of trihalomethanes.
Matawan's drinking water no longer contains inappropriately high levels of trihalomethanes, according to a public notice mailed to borough homeowners this week. Trihalomethanes are, "four volatile organic chemicals that form when a chlorine disinfectant reacts with natural organic matter in the water," the notice explains. Matawan residents have been receiving quarterly notices since the water system first tested too high for trihalomethanes in 2011, which violates drinking water standards. The water distribution samples collected and analyzed between the second quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2013 were below the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for the organic chemicals, according to the notice. The problem was addressed by …

The council is seeking public input on the budget, which was introduced in March.
The public is welcome to comment and ask questions about Aberdeen's $16,333,733.06 municipal budget at the township council's May 7 meeting. The budget, which was introduced on March 20, calls for an approximately $601,389.83 increase in the tax levy from the adopted 2012 budget to $10,690,313.82. About $719,969 of the tax levy is allotted for the Matawan Aberdeen Public Library. According to Aberdeen Chief Financial Officer Angela Morin, the budget has not been changed since it was first introduced on March 20. The tax rate would also see an increase if it were adopted as is, from 48.7 cents per $100 of a property's assessed value to 51.77 cents. Although there is a 6.3 percent increase in the tax rate, the budget complies with state …

The budget, which will only be introduced and not adopted Tuesday, calls for a decrease in the tax levy but a slight increase in the tax rate.
The Matawan Borough Council will introduce a $10,554,843.34 total general municipal budget at their meeting Tuesday, according to Borough Administrator Louis Ferrara. The budget, which is available on the borough website, is approximately $79,442 below the approved 2012 municipal budget. The tax levy would also see a decrease of about $263,600 to $7,484,009.33 if the budget is adopted as introduced. The borough would also raise $325,031 in taxes for the Matawan Aberdeen Public Library. Under the 2 percent cap, the borough is permitted to raise the tax levy to $7,644,544, however they are below that amount by about $160,535. Although the budget may decrease, the tax rate may see a slight increase from 70.9 cents per $100 of a home's …

Matawan also received one of the 375 grants awarded to New Jersey municipalities, totaling $76.2 million in local aid from the state.
Aberdeen and Matawan are two of 36 municipalities in Monmouth County that will receive a local aid grant from the state government, according to a press release issued by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) on Thursday. The Zoning Board memorialized the resolution approving major changes to the McDonald's on Route 34 in Aberdeen.
The Aberdeen Township Zoning Board gave McDonald's a green light to revamp their Aberdeen location, according to a resolution adopted by the board on April 24. The current structure features an old design for the popular fast-food chain, with a tan cement and stone facade and minimal signage. McDonald's new restaurant design has sleeker and more modern elements, such as a single golden arch versus the dual arches that form an "M". Final site plan approval by the Zoning Board allows McDonald's Real Estate Company to demolish the existing building at 1108 Route 34 and construct a new one with a drive-thru facility that has two ordering points. The project required several variances, including one allowing the drive-thru, one to reduce the…
