A Matawan man plead guilty to stealing nearly $1 million and the family home of a now-deceased senior citizen diagnosed with dementia and terminal cancer by posing as her nephew, according to Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni. James J. Demitro, 43, who used the alias “Anthony Tatalia,” admitted his crimes in front of Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Francis J. Vernoia, Pr.J.S.C. pleading guilty Thursday to second degree attempted impersonation, five counts of second degree theft by deception, and two counts of third degree theft by deception, according to a press release issued by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. Twelve sawed-off shotguns and one AK-47 were among the 45 illegal guns collected in Monmouth County.
The Monmouth County gun buyback program brought in 45 illegal weapons last weekend, including an AK-47 and 15 other assault rifles. A total of 1,581 guns were collected in Asbury Park and Keansburg on March 8 and 9. This was the fourth buyback program in the state this year, supervised by the State Attorney General's Office. The state has now collected 7,092 firearms from state-run buyback programs, according to Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa. The buybacks are funded through criminal forfeiture funds. In Monmouth County, law enforcement officers paid an average of $132 per gun, for a maximum of three guns per person. Updated 4:45 p.m.: Investigators do not suspect foul play in the death of a man discovered at an abandoned factory near the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station, according to Charles Webster, public information officer for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. The body was discovered in the factory the morning of Saturday, Jan. 19, Webster said. An autopsy performed that afternoon concluded that there was no foul play involved in his death. The identity of the man and the cause of death were not available, Webster said. Webster would not confirm whether or not the man was homeless or why he was in the factory. A Plainfield man was convicted Wednesday on one count of third degree endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of fourth degree criminal sexual contact, according to Acting Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni. Jerrish L. Halsey, 40, of Plainfield, was found guilty of all counts following a week long jury trial before the Honorable Francis Vernoia, J.S.C., according to a press release from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. The charges in this case stem from an investigation by the Aberdeen Police Department conducted in May of 2011 after school officials reported a disclosure by one of their students. Monmouth residents who suspect corruption by government officials now have a direct line where they can blow the whistle. The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) launched a tip line and e-mail address on Friday to take reports of fraud, corruption and abuse by local government agencies. “The large majority of public officials render honest and faithful service. The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office charged the Main Street resident Monday.
A Matawan man was charged Monday for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender. The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office says that Howard Anderson-Lee, 57, of Main Street, violated the New Jersey Registration and Community Notification Laws by failing to register his address with authorities. It is a fourth-degree crime. Bail was set at $500 with no 10 percent option by Judge Thomas Scully of the Monmouth County Superior Court. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A Matawan man received a life sentence yesterday for being the “Leader of a Narcotics Trafficking Network,” which is the official title of New Jersey’s drug kingpin statute, according to a press release from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. Dectric Rawls, 32, of Fredwood Place, will be required to serve at least 25 years of that sentence before he will be eligible to apply for parole, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. Rawls, who acted as the head of a Bayshore area based heroin distribution operation, pled guilty to all charges against him on April 30, 2012.
