The high-energy tournament pitted high school students, staff and the Matawan and Aberdeen PBA's against one another.
The Matawan Regional High School student council volleyball tournament raised over $1,400 for Restore the Bayshore, a local charitable organization that supports Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. The event brought in $1,486 through admission tickets, a 50/50 raffle and Restore the Bayshore merchandise that the student council sold, according to MRHS teacher Marc Komito. The winner of the 50/50 raffle chose to donate the winnings back to the cause, he said. The high-energy tournament was a Round Robin style competition between high school students, faculty, Aberdeen PBA Local #163 and Matawan PBA Local #179. On March 8, 2013, beginning at 6:30 pm in the main gymnasium, the Matawan Regional HS student council will be hosting a charity volleyball tournament.
Cheer on your neighbors at a charity volleyball tournament to benefit Restore the Bayshore hosted by the Matawan Regional High School Student Council, the Matawan PBA Local #179 and the Aberdeen PBA Local #163. The tournament will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 8 at the main gymnasium at Matawan Regional High School. Admission costs $3 and all proceeds will benefit Restore the Bayshore. Volunteers from Restore the Bayshore will also be present to sell merchandise and run a 50/50 raffle. In addition to the funds raised at the tournament, the student council will present Restore the Bayshore with a $1,000 donation. Read more about the tournament here.

The goal of Restore the Bayshore is to focus relief efforts on areas along the bay that were severely damaged during Sandy.
Sandy turned the once calm Raritan Bay into a weapon against the homes and businesses nestled along the shore, destroying entire communities with high waters and powerful waves. As the relief efforts continue, the Matawan PBA Local 179 wants to help make sure that communities like Cliffwood Beach, Keyport, Union Beach and Keansburg receive the help they need. "The issue is you have local people donating money but it's not coming back to our own community," said Matawan Lt. Jason Gallo.
