The Matawan Aberdeen Board of Education voted Monday to allow the business administrator submit a $2.9 million capital improvement plan to the New Jersey Department of Education. The improvements involve several district wide security upgrades expected to cost $589,980, including the installation of external door card access readers, replacing core exterior door locks, replacement of 40 surveillance cameras, replacement of main IT network switches and the upgrade of the walkie-talkie system. The plan also includes $50,000 to install LED lighting at Ravine Drive, Lloyd Road and the Matawan Aberdeen Middle School to improve safety in the parking lot and the area surrounding the building at night. The Matawan Aberdeen Board of Education elected a new president and vice president for 2013 at their Jan. 3 reorganization meeting. After swearing in new members Tara Martinez, James Macomber, Joelle Nappi and Kathleen Gentile, the board nominated and voted for both leadership positions. Elected as board president was Jeff Delaney, an Aberdeen resident who is currently in his first term as a board member. Delaney is looking forward to continuing his service to the local educational community. "I've been in education all my life, never from this perspective. The Matawan Aberdeen Board of Education welcomed four new members to the board with a swearing in ceremony at their reorganization meeting Jan. 3. James Macomber and Tara Martinez will represent Aberdeen for a three-year term on the board. Joelle Nappi will represent Aberdeen for a one-year unexpired term and Kathleen Gentile will represent Matawan for a three-year term. The new members shared an excitement for the challenge ahead. "I'm just excited the way it worked out and I think we have a good team," said Martinez. Gentile is hoping to keep the district moving forward to improve student achievement. The Monmouth County Clerk's Office has released the official results for the Matawan Aberdeen Board of Education.
The Matawan Aberdeen Regional School District Board of Education will welcome four new faces in January. According to the official election results recently released by the Monmouth County Clerk's Office, James Macomber, Tara Martinez, Joelle Nappi and Kathleen Gentile received the highest number of votes. Macomber and Martinez will each represent Aberdeen for a three-year term on the board. Nappi will represent Aberdeen for a one-year unexpired term and Gentile will represent Matawan for a three-year term. There are still a number of provisional ballots to count, Monmouth County Clerk's Office says.
The Monmouth County Clerk's Office is still busy counting provisional ballots cast for the Nov. 6 election. However, early results show two candidates taking a small lead for the write-in positions on the Matawan Aberdeen Board of Education. According to the unofficial election results, available on the county website, Joelle Nappi has taken a slight lead over her fellow candidates for the one-year unexpired term in Aberdeen. The unofficial results also show Kathleen Gentile taking the lead for the three-year term in Matawan. However, neither candidate has a large enough lead for a winner to be determined until all votes are tallied and the official results are available. District schools were shuttered for two weeks during and after the storm.
Matawan and Aberdeen students attended school for the first time Monday since Sandy rolled through the Bayshore two weeks ago. Now the district must amend their school calendar to make up for lost instructional time. Dr. Marc Natanagara, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, explained at the Nov. 12 Board of Education committee meeting that the days must be made up in order to fulfill the 180-day school year mandated by the Department of Education. Schools were closed for ten days, however two days were already scheduled off for the NJEA teachers' conference. Therefore, local schools need to account for eight missed days. James Macomber and Tara Martinez will be two new faces to the Matawan Aberdeen Regional School District Board of Education, according to the initial results from the Monmouth County Clerk. Official results will not be available until all electronic and absentee ballots have been counted. Residents have until Friday night to submit their electronic ballot, which was a measure implemented in New Jersey to ease the voting process for voters displaced by Hurricane Sandy. James Macomber is a lifelong resident of Aberdeen who worked as a teacher in the district from 2002 to 2006 and as a basketball coach from 2001 to 2011.
