The Matawan Recreation Department is hosting a downtown cleanup this weekend.
Spruce up Main Street in Matawan this weekend by pitching in a helping hand with the Matawan Department of Recreation. According to Recreation Director Deirdre Ring, the borough is hosting a downtown cleanup to kick off the nice weather. Volunteers will be pruning and planting the flower pots the line the streets. "Many people ask what they can do to get involved within town. This is the perfect opportunity to pitch in to help us beautify Main Street by cleaning up and planting flowers in the flower pots," Ring said. "It provides an opportunity for residents to come out and lend a hand while getting to know some of our volunteers, and providing a vital service to the community." Volunteers are asked to meet in the parking lot of Bank of …

The storefront remains vacant after Dollar Express closed this December
Dollar Express on Main Street in Matawan closed its doors for good shortly after Christmas. Eileen Gendus, a Holmdel resident who owned the dollar store at 147 Main Street for two and a half years, decided to sell the store and pursue another retail venture further south. Prior to the Dollar Express, another dollar store occupied the space for about five years, according to Gendus. Before that, Matawan Drugs was there. She told Patch that she hoped someone would open another dollar store in her location to ensure that products remained available at a low price for local shoppers. However, in mid-February the storefront still remains vacant. What type of business would you like to see here?

The Move Your Money Project urges Americans to take their money out of the big banks on Saturday.
If activists get their way, there will be a whole lot of big bank customers clutching withdrawl slips this weekend. That's because Saturday is National Bank Transfer Day, the center of a push by the Move Your Money Project, a grassroots movement encouraging Americans to take money out of big banks and put it into the vaults of Main Street institutions. Local banks say they are already seeing an uptick in traffic to their branches from customers fed up with the threat of fee hikes from the likes of Bank of America. Rob Werner, COO of Two River Community Bank, which has 11 branches in Monmouth County, said even though Bank of America backed off on its plans to apply a $5 fee to debit purchases, many customers opted to vote with their feet. "…

Married couple helps boost business on Main Street by starting their own
It is not uncommon for a married couple to start a small business together. It is slightly less common, however, for a married couple to start two separate small businesses, with just one shop sitting between each of theirs. Lee O'Brien, 45, owns Attractive Tattoo at 116 Main Street. His wife, Jennifer, 41, owns My Sister's Closet Consignment at 114 Main Street, which will celebrate it's grand opening soon. Lee grew up in Matawan, and now lives in Morganville with his wife. The couple met through an online dating service and were married on Feb. 13, 2010. Lee worked for A1 Comfort Care Heating & Cooling in Wall Township until about a year and a half ago. Around the time he and Jennifer were married, Lee took another plunge. He finally …

Very true, Joseph. Do as much due diligence as possible prior to the purchase. Your "bargain" may end up costing more than the purchase price especially if oil contamination is involved.   more ›
