Food For Fines Did you lose your library card or forget to return your book on time? The library will waive library card fees and late fees in exchange for non-perishable food items and toiletries. Items should not be past their due date, and may include, although not limited to, canned goods, boxed pasta, laundry detergent, toothpaste, deoderant and diapers. The program runs until Dec. 31. Mitten Tree The Children's Room at the library is collecting new mittens, gloves, scarves and hats for children and adults in need from the Matawan and Aberdeen community. People of all ages pitched in Tuesday night to help wrap holiday gifts for families struggling after Sandy.
The Matawan Aberdeen Public Library transformed into Santa's workshop Tuesday night as volunteers wrapped holiday gifts for families struggling in the aftermath of Sandy. The gifts were donated to Operation Jersey Shore Santa (OJSS), a charitable organization launched only days after the storm to collect toys and clothes for families who may not have the resources to celebrate this year, according to founder Jackie O'Leary of Brick. Library Director Kimberly Paone saw an OJSS Facebook status looking for volunteers who were willing to wrap the gifts. Charities were selected based on the positive impact they have on the Bayshore area, PB president said.
The Matawan Police Benevolence Association Local #179 will donate $10,000 in cash as well toys to local charities this holiday season. Restore the Bayshore, Heroes Helping Heroes, Union Beach Disaster Relief Fund and Hope for Highlands will each recieve $2,500 and the Matawan First Aid and Rescue Squad will receive toys and gifts the PBA collected throughout the year, according to PBA president Andrew Marsala. Restore the Bayshore was launched by the PBA in the wake of Sandy to provide financial assistance to families and businesses in the Bayshore area when resources like FEMA and personal insurance fall short. Local salon hopes to help offer children some holiday cheer after their lives were flipped upside down by Sandy.
D'Bella Salon and Operation Jersey Shore Santa want to make sure that children devastated by Sandy will enjoy a bit of hope this holiday season. "We're targeting those families where we can help make their children's holiday brighter in the midst of all this turmoil," said Robert DeSanto, co-owner of D'Bella. Operation Jersey Shore Santa was launched only days after Sandy rolled through New Jersey and their volunteers are working to collect toys and clothes for families who may not have the resources to celebrate this year, explained founder Jackie O'Leary of Brick. The Matawan Historical Society hosted the second annual Rose Hill Cemetery Tour this weekend, guiding numerous attendees through the cemetery's winding hills and historical significance. The tour was led by Al Savolaine, a Matawan resident and member of the Historical Society. Savolaine, known as 'The Cemetery Man,' has now spent three years researching the lives of the people buried in the cemetery in order to create this tour. Rural burial grounds, like Rose Hill, gained popularity when church cemeteries became overcrowded. In fact, Savolaine pointed out, cemeteries were the first public parks and were often visited by locals looking to take a walk or share a picnic on a Sunday afternoon. The council issued a proclamation Tuesday thanking the lifelong Cliffwood resident
The Aberdeen Township Council thanked a lifelong Cliffwood man for his dedication and generosity to the community with a proclamation Tuesday evening. Claude A. Jones is a 1973 graduate of Matawan Regional High School who studied at Central Michigan University and went on to have a dedicated military career, according to the proclamation. Jones served in South Korea, as well as at multiple air force bases in America and Germany, and retired as Lieutenant Colonel Claude Jones. "Jones attributes his family and community upbringing for his success," the proclamation explained. Walk with Joe, a memorial 5K walk in memory of Patrick ‘Joe’ Driscoll, who lost his life on Flight 93 on Sept. 11, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. at Monmouth Battlefield State Park. Walk with Joe is in the its 10th year and has collected more than $250,000 since the first walk in 2002. The walk not only recognizes Driscoll, but also commemorates all of the men and women who lost their lives on United Flight 93 nearly 11 years ago. Additionally, Walk with Joe this year will also remember Christopher Gray, son of former Manalapan mayor Jim Gray, and Thomas J. McCann, a FDNY first responder who both lost their lives in the twin towers on Sept. 11, 2001. Walk with Joe donates money to a mix of charities including the Samaritan …

Muslims For Life will hold their second annual nationwide blood drive, with two donation locations in Old Bridge
One unit of blood at a time, Muslims for Life are working toward exceeding their goal of collecting 12,000 units of blood in honor of the victims of Sept. 11. Local blood drive organizer Abdul Nasir explained that Muslims for Life is a national initiative that for the second year in a row is running blood drives across the country. In 2011, they were able to exceed their goal of 11,000 by 803 units, according to the Muslims for Life website. "Last year we surpassed our target and this year we are going to go way beyond our target," Nasir said. "We want to do something to save some lives." More than 66,000 individuals in Monmouth County rely on food distributed by The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties each year, according to a proclamation made by Mayor Fred Tagliarini along with the Aberdeen Township Council. The proclamation declares September as Hunger Action Month in Aberdeen, stating that Aberdeen is, "committed to working with The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties in educating people about the role an importance of food banks in addressing hunger and raising awareness of the need to devote more resources and attention to hunger issues." Local dental practice teams up with national non-profit to provide free dental care to people who otherwise cannot afford it
Aberdeen Family Dental staff members and patients were all smiles the morning of Aug. 24, while dentists and hygenists donated their time and resources to the community. The one day event was part of Dentistry From The Heart, a national non-profit focused on providing free dental care to those who cannot afford it, according to their website. "There is definitely a lot of people underserved in the community that don't have access to dental care," said Dr. Dan Di Cesare of Aberdeen Family Dental, noting that people without dental care often try to ignore a problem until it becomes too painful, and then visit the emergency room.
