Aberdeen's First Female Officer Reflects on Career That Chose Her

Kathy Sisti never planned to become a police officer, but looking back she wouldn't have it any other way

This article was originally published on March 12, 2012. Growing up with five brothers and sisters in Strathmore, Kathy Sisti never thought about becoming a police officer. In fact, when it came time for her to pursue a full time career, she went to business school. Sisti, who is now 48, worked at a couple places as a secretary, including the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and Money Magazine in New York City. After she got married to her husband George in 1985, Sisti decided to leave her position in the city. Soon, she was busy raising their daughter Jennifer. Aberdeen Volunteer Reflects on 37 Years of Service

Herb Caravella joined the fire department after graduating from MRHS

Herb Caravella turns down the volume on his radio scanner and sinks into an office chair at a table in Aberdeen Township Hose and Chemical Company No. 2. "Man, I am tired," Caravella admits, as he closes his eyes for a brief moment. "When you sit back and think of what you are doing, it's crazy." The Matawan Regional High School alumnus, who now lives in Marlboro, joined the Aberdeen Township Hose and Chemical Company No. 1 when he was 18, in order to help his community and "stay out of trouble," he said. Now, thirty seven years later, he has served as an engineer, a lieutenant and a captain for the fire department and works for Aberdeen Township in the Department of Works. Beginning the Job Search at Church

From networking to interview skills, groups at St. Mary's R.C. Parish and Christ Church in Middletown offer practical help for those out of work.

When Middletown resident Regina Donohue was laid off from a human resource position in August of 2009, one of the first places she went was church, and not for a potluck. She was here to network. After 18 years of recruiting candidates for her company, now she was the one who needed help getting recruited. She turned to St. Mary Roman Catholic Parish in Middletown, which hosts a job networking group once a month. It also posts resumes of job seeking parishioners on its Web site. There, she got a chance to brush up on her interview skills, and perhaps more importantly, get moral support from like-minded people — her fellow church members.
