Both councils introduced and passed on first reading an ordinance establishing a joint CERT.
The Aberdeen Township Council and the Matawan Borough Council officially created a joint Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) at their respective meetings Feb. 5. CERT is a nationwide initiative that falls under the Office of Emergency management. According to Aberdeen Township's website, members are trained to respond to emergencies and can provide "critical support to first reponders, provide immediate assistance to victims and organizae spontaneous volunteers at a diasaster site." Both councils introduced and passed an ordinance establishing a CERT and then a resolution creating an interlocal agreement between the two municipalities. Members of Matawan-Aberdeen's Community Emergency Response Team volunteered their time over the weekend to help with the water crisis.
Volunteers from Matawan-Aberdeen's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) spent hours over the weekend helping with relief efforts after a bridge collapsed over New Jersey American Water Company pipes on Friday, causing them to break. CERT Coordinator Herb Caravella said volunteers were called to assist with efforts in Middletown, where they helped to direct traffic and distribute cases of bottled water to Monmouth County residents affected by the water main break. "We were there for 11 hours on Saturday, working in three to four hour shifts," Caravella said. "Then again on Sunday." Matawan and Aberdeen began forming a joint response team late last year. CERT is part of a nationwide effort that was initiated after 9/11.

Matawan and Aberdeen have initiated the beginning stages of a joint Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) according to Herb Caravella, the communications coordinator of Aberdeen CERT. CERT is a nationwide initiative that falls under the Office of Emergency management. According to Aberdeen Township's website, members are trained to respond to emergencies and can provide "critical support to first reponders, provide immediate assistance to victims and organizae spontaneous volunteers at a diasaster site."
