Bayshore Community Hospital Opens New Sleep Center; Counting Sheep to Retire

Local counting sheep said good morning and good bye to Monmouth County residents before hopping a train to their vacation destination.

Commuters were greeted at the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station Wednesday morning by friends they normally only meet in the bedroom. Two Monmouth County counting sheep spent the early morning hours waving and announcing their retirement while employees from Bayshore Community Hospital passed out flyers announcing the opening of a new Center for Sleep Medicine, a service of Meridian Neuroscience. Authorities Identify Man Killed by Train Near Aberdeen-Matawan Station

NJ TRANSIT today released the identity of the man struck by a train on Saturday, Jan. 12.

Authorities have identified 41-year-old Miquel O'Neill of Keyport as the man who was struck and killed by a train near the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, according to NJ Transit Spokeswoman Nancy Snyder. The initial investigation showed that O'Neill went around the crossing gates on Atlantic Avenue as North Jersey Coast Line train 7277, en route to Long Branch, entered the station, according to NJ Transit.  O'Neill was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries overnight.  The cause of the incident remains under investigation, Snyder said.

Man Dies After Being Struck by Train Near Aberdeen-Matawan Station

He was transported to the hospital after the incident

A man was struck by a train near the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station at about 10:30 Saturday night, according to NJ TRANSIT Spokeswoman Courtney Carroll.  The initial investigation shows the man went around the crossing gates on Atlantic Avenue as North Jersey Coast Line train 7277, en route to Long Branch, entered the station, Carroll said.  The adult victim was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, according to Carroll. He succumbed to his injuries overnight.  Information on the identity of the victim was not yet available. Patch will update this article as more information becomes available.

NJ Transit to Offer Bus Service from Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station

Buses will take commuters to the ferries at Liberty State Park.

NJ Transit will now offer emergency buses to local commuters from the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station during rush hour free of charge. Beginning Friday, Nov. 9, the bus service will take commuters from the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station to the Statue Cruise Lines ferries located at Liberty State Park. The ferry shuttles commuters between Liberty State Park and Battery Park. The buses will operate from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. to accomodate the morning and evening rush hour. NJ Transit personnel, including a bus dispatcher, will be at the train station. Both the bus and ferry service are free of charge.

Officials Announce New Jersey Transit Safety Measures

Safety initiative comes after death of three teenagers in October

A variety of safety measures will sweep New Jersey Transit lines within the next year or so, transportation officials announced Wednesday, in an effort to reduce the number of accidental train deaths across the state. The safety improvements, which include improved signage, warning systems and educational programs, are the result of a three-month study by the Safety Along Railroads Leadership Oversight Committee, formed in wake of the deaths of three teenagers by New Jersey Transit trains last October. Aberdeen to Present Updated Investigation of Land for Proposed Transit Village

The investigation is an update to the original one conducted in 1999

The Aberdeen Township Planning Board will hold a public hearing about the supplemental and updated preliminary investigation report designating the land surrounding the train station as an area in need of redevelopment. According to Planning Board Secretary Maxine Rescorl, not much has changed in this report. The original investigation was done in 1999, and the township council and the planning board felt it was important to update the survey before moving forward. The purpose of the public hearing is to hear comments from all interested parties regarding the supplemental and updated report, and the Planning Board may take action to adopt the report. Aberdeen to Re-examine Redevelopment Area Near Train Station

After eleven years, the council says it is time to take another look

The Aberdeen Township Council unanimously authorized the planning board to conduct a new study of the approximately 60 acres of township property surrounding the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station at their meeting Tuesday night. The land was studied in 1999 but according to Township Council Attorney Daniel McCarthy, the council decided to re-examine the property to see what changes have occurred to the land over the past eleven years and ensure that it complies with state laws. "We just want to make sure the original study still comports with the existing law, because as you can imagine a lot of things have changed since 1999," McCarthy explained.
