I found this place with a friend this past winter and have frequented the place once every 3-4 weeks…Read More on Friday or Saturday night and we liked the place - a lot - and we're sad to hear of it's closing. We drove by one night, heard live music and went in to check it out and found the people, from patrons to barmaids to be friendly, real and there to have fun.dance and/or listen to good ol' live rock and roll with the house band - which the Matawan/Old Bridge area sorely lacks. The barmaids at the Shack were friendly, personable on top of things and never had us waiting. While we were outsiders to the regulars, we never felt like outsiders and would hang, talk to some of the patrons, play darts or pool while listening to music from the band or jukebox that was rock oriented and more to our liking. When we went to go to the Shack to drink only to discover it was closed we did venture into Maloney'ss but the atmosphere / ambiance was just not there -- the eclectic drink list was impressive, drink prices high and did like the Soho or Starbucks type of music being played (Joe Jackson, early REM, Elvis Costello) but something was missing from Maloneys - perhaps Maloney's lacked intimacy, the bartenders less welcoming/friendly, or the crowd. Anyway the Kat Shack will be missed and so far has not been an easy establishment to replace (went to Teddy's and Ale House this Saturday and Kat Shack wins hands). I hope the Shack reopens, and soon.

I really like this place. My best buddy and I get out of work early on Fridays and every week we…Read More would meet up at Kat Shack for beers. Very comfortable atmosphere. Not the most happening younger joint (we are both in our late 20's) but that's just fine by us. Good place to relax and get a little drunk, or really drunk if you're so inclined. Solid food as well. We will miss the Shack and I hope it reopens soon. I might buy the damn thing if it goes up for sale! Oh, and Maloney's sucks. Go to Court Jester or Brass Rail instead.

Having grown up in New Jersey and recalling many happy days spent in Seaside Heights, I was…Read More delighted to see the opening of the boardwalk on the Today Show. I was not thrilled, however, to see that idiot from the Today Show releasing an oversized beachball into the ocean while she yelled "free Willie." "kill Willie" would have been more appropriate for what she in her imbecile joy was doing to further endanger the sea life and pollute the ocean! The Today Show continues to spiral down to idiocy.

When I moved here 20 years ago, I really enjoyed the character of the old victorian shops on Main…Read More Street, the old hardware store which had everything etc. They were all knocked down or moved to a larger store which eventually failed.....I always wondered why? People like to be be around old charming areas where they feel comfortable walking around. When people feel comfortable they stay and spend money. When they spend money they create revenue and bring much needed tax dollars into the community. We need to encourage new business to open up and bring families back....no wait the families are already here they just need a place to go.

Post Sandy JCP&L made repairs on my street to restore power. As part of the repair they left…Read More wires, the top of a utility pole and the attached electric equipment on the ground in my front yard. Although I have called the company at length at least 4 times and have been assured clean up would occur as soon as possible, this heavy, unsightly debris is still in my front yard today. I wonder if other customers share the same problem and how much equipment waste has been left by JCP&L on road sides. Isn't it their responsibility to clean up their equipment debris? See the rubbish daily and recalling so many days without power, heat and showers doesn't make me pleased to hear of a rate hike.

Sure. It would have fit better near the train station, instead of NOTHING. Automobile and rail…Read More commuters would have stopped there for coffee, meals, or gas. Main St. is a major transportation artery between Route 35, the GSP, and neighboring towns. That tax revenue stream is now going to go to Marlboro. What is this vision for the train station redevelopment zone anyway? I moved to Matawan 3 years ago and so far have seen three traffic lights get swapped out for newer darker colored ones, a 7/11 close down, and day laborers move 200 yards down the road from the Quick Check to the train station, where they clearly blend into the landscape much better (sarcasm). What are my taxes going to besides schooling when I have beyond legal limits of THHM in my water supply for over a year now and a downtown that looks weathered, dilapidated, and uncared for? (I am not a democrat and this is not a political statement. I am just a citizen of Matawan on a rant.) Thanks for listening.
Marlene LaMura March 22, 2013 at 03:01 pm
All residents of Matawan should be ranting as well as most of your neighboring towns &…Read More townships. There is no real leadership in these towns. It is all about what they can get from the residents. If the residents don't unite soon they are going to be taxed out of existence!
