“Would you like the white/composite or the metal/amalgam filling?” this is the question that stumps everybody at their dental appointment. Most people resort to the metal/amalgam filling because of the cost issue, but in the end the white/composite fillings are the best choice.

“Metal/amalgam filling is held in by retention, which means instead of removing the decay, I have to drill more tooth structure to make retention walls. This process therefore makes each wall independent of the other, making your teeth more susceptible to fracturing,” explains Dr. Nicholas G. Zeik of Zeik Dental in Marlboro, NJ. White/composite fillings on the other hand are held in by a bonding. Bonding makes it possible to only remove the decay, which makes the tooth unlikely to fracture. Dr. Zeik reccomends the white/composite fillings to save as much tooth structure as possible.
