Heat Advisory and Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued

Extreme heat is expected this afternoon and strong storms are predicted to roll in tonight throughout Monmouth County

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for central New Jersey due to the extreme hot temperatures and high humidity which create an unsafe environment. The heat advisory will remain in effect until 8 p.m. tonight.

The heat indexes for our area will reach between 99 and 104 degrees this afternoon, according to the NWS. The impacts of the immense heat and humidity affect everyone, especially the elderly, children, and people who are sick.

Some precautionary measures the National Weather Service recommends are:

  • drink plenty of fluids
  • stay in an air conditioned location
  • stay out of the sun
  • check on elderly relatives and neighbors
  • do not leave person or a pet inside of a parked car
  • if outside, reduce strenuous activity and rest frequently and stay in the shade
  • wear light-weight and loose fitting clothing
  • please bring pets into an air conditioned location and supply them with plenty of water
  • If someone is having a heat stroke, please dial 911.

In addition to the extreme heat, a Hazardous Weather outlook has also been issued for this afternoon and tonight. Strong thunderstorms are expected to come through the area which will bring heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and cloud to ground lightening.

Be careful as the heavy rain may cause flooding.
