Three Incumbents and Two New Candidates Seek Open School Board Seats

There are four seats open on the Matawan Aberdeen Regional Board of Education in the November election

Five people filed petitions to fill four open spots on the Matawan Aberdeen Regional Board of Education by Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline, according to the Monmouth County Board of Elections.

There are (3) three-year seats and (1) one-year unexpired term, according to business administrator James Strimple. Board vice president Elizabeth Hayward, Kenneth Aitken and Gerald Donaghue currently hold the three-year seats and Patricia Phillips currently holds the one-year term.

Here are the candidates who have filed petitions with ten or more signatures to run in the election, according to the Monmouth County Board of Elections. Incumbents are indicated by (I):

  • Kenneth Aitken (I), of 65 Juniper Place, Aberdeen
  • Elizabeth Hayword (I), of 11 Iona Place, Aberdeen
  • Patricia Phillips (I), of 321 Edgeview Road, Keyport
  • James Macomber, of 50 Jubilee Circle, Aberdeen
  • Tara Martinez, of 408 Shady Nook Street, Cliffwood Beach

Gerald Donaghue will not run for reelection. The election will take place in November.

Matawan-Aberdeen Patch, I notice you removed a comment from yesterday that I happen to agree with, namely voting out the current board president Chuck Kenny and removing the current superintendent. I was hoping you were interested in giving a forum for an open discussion, am I wrong?

Hi Ed, Yes, we do encourage open discussion and we do like to hear everyone's opinions, both positive and negative. The comment crossed the line into a personal attack, which violates our terms of use. That is why it was removed.

How was it a personal attack? It has been common discussion among so many of the parents for many months. Many even knew and were speaking of it before it happened. You can call it rumor, but it panned out exactly as many said. I think there is much more here than you might realize.

The seats on the Matawan-Aberdeen BOE are divided into 6 seats for Aberdeen and 3 seats for Matawan. Only Matawan residents may hold the Matawan seats and only Aberdeen residents may hold the Aberdeen seats. Every election there are two Aberdeen seats up for election and one Matawan seat. So I am confused by your article that does not list the seats separately and lists only 5 Aberdeen residents as candidates running. None of the 5 Aberdeen residents may run for or hold the Matawan seat. Please separately list the Matawan seats and Aberdeen seats so we don't get confused. Thanks.
