Ravine Drive School Celebrates Winning the NJEA Read Across NJ Reading Contest

Radio Disney performed a concert at the school

Students at Ravine Drive Elementary School celebrated placing first in the New Jersey Read Across NJ Contest recently with an appearance from Mickey Mouse and the Radio Disney AM 640 Road Crew.

The school earned first place this year for the first time after reading over 57,084 books in three months. This is the fourth year that the school has participated in the contest.

Tara Barry and Amanda Andriola, classroom teachers, as well as Debbie Morillo, the school librarian, worked closely with all of the homeroom teachers to assist the students in maintaining a monthly reading log to record each book the students read in school. The teachers saw students reading in the hallways before class, during lunch and recess, at after school programs and on line waiting for their bus.

Patricia Janover, Principal of Ravine Drive School, shared that parents also provided a great deal of support by encouraging their children to read each night and adding to their reading logs. The students were eager to pick up new books and engulf themselves in literature. The Reading Contest helped to build each student’s love for reading, and opened their eyes to many new authors.

The students were excited to celebrate their win with an assembly that was hosted by Radio Disney AM 640 Road Crew on May 18. Mickey Mouse was also there to help the students and staff celebrate their accomplishmen.
