Matawan Aberdeen Board of Education Swears in New Student Representative

The Matawan Regional High School senior delivered her first report at the Sept. 24 meeting

The Matawan Regional Board of Education swore in a new student respresentative at their Sept. 24 regular action meeting.

"Radhika Kumar is one of Matawan Regional High School's most accomplished students," said Charles Kenny, the board of education president.

The trilingual senior at Matawan Regional High School is a member of the National Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society, as well as the president of the Key Club and the vice president of the Environmental Club. She is also a member of the Math Honors Club, a member of the Future Medical Leaders Association, and a writer for the Huskieview.

The student representative is responsible for providing a report on the happenings at each school in the district during the board's regular action meetings. As a student in the district, Kumar will also be able to offer insight to the board as she sees first hand the implementation of new policies and initiatives. The board selects a senior for the position each academic year.

Kenny noted that Kumar's dedication to community service at the Matawan Aberdeen Public Library, the Autism Walk for Autism Speaks, and cleaning up Cliffwood Beach Park has garnered her national attention.

"Because of her passionate commitment towards improving our community, she has been recognized by President Obama and the White House for her efforts in enriching our Township of Aberdeen," Kenny said.

After being sworn in, Kumar took her seat with the board and delivered her first report.

"First and foremost, I would like to thank the superintendent, Mr. Healy, the board of education, and my principal for giving me such a great opportunity. It's an honor and a privilege for me to be here as a representative for our school district," Kumar said. "I look forward to being a part of the educational community."

I believe the students vote for the representative. The Board does not appoint or select the representative.

Congratulations to Radhika! I had the privilege of being her bus driver for 1 or 2 years. She was always punctual and was among the consistently best behaved students on the bus. I had no idea of her many interests and wish her well in the future.
