MAMS African American Student Union Creates Art to Honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

The artwork was created by Matawan Aberdeen Middle School students to honor and represent Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life and message.

The Matawan Aberdeen Middle School African American Student Union unveiled a colorful portrait of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 21.

The AASU, an organization that teaches students about current and historical events about race and culture and celebrate diversity, created this artwork to celebrate and represent Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life, according to Principal Cory Radisch.

A sign hanging near the piece explains that the colors represent unity in a diverse country.

"Dr. King believe that we are all equal no matter what race. We all have the same rights and should all be treated the same way. The different colors coming together to create a beautiful picture represent people of different backgrounds coming together to make the world a better place," the sign states.

The artwork will remain hanging in the middle school forever, Radisch said.
