Husky Café Offers Matawan Regional Students a Cozy Place to Study

MRHS Media Center expanded its hours and added a mini café to create a comfortable and academic atmosphere

Two students sit on cushioned chairs around a small wooden table and chat, one with a hot chocolate in her hand and the other with a notebook. Around them, other students use computers to work on assignments and study. The scene is much like that of an afternoon at Starbucks, however this café is exclusively for students.

The Husky Café officially opened for business on April 23 in the high school's Media Center. It marks a move by the school to make the center more accessible and comfortable, explained Library Media Specialist Zachary Gross.

"The focus was on providing a place where students can study and access computers, which is important to have five days per week," said Gross.

Previously, the Media Center was not open on Monday or Tuesday. Now it will now be open five days a week, until 3:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday and until 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

Coffee, hot chocolate and snacks can be also be purchased there after school for $1 each.

"It's just about making it more comfortable and inviting students in," Gross said.

New furniture was purchased and a desk was moved in order to accomodate the café area near the entrance to the media center, an area that is flooded with natural light on sunny days.

Derek, a sophomore at MRHS, was enjoying a hot chocolate with friends after school on Tuesday.

"It's kind of nice," Derek said. "Having this after school with the library, it makes it feel more relaxing instead of just test, test, test."
