Help Matawan and Aberdeen Students Start the School Year Right

Many local students are in need of basic school supplies, like notebooks and pencils.

Help a local child get prepared for the upcoming school year by donating backpacks and school supplies to the Matawan-Aberdeen Rotary Club.

Last year, the Rotary Club was able to surpass and this year the club hopes to collect 200. In addition, they are collecting other items a student may need, such as glue, crayons, notebooks, pens, pencils and folders.

Each backpack will then be filled with the donated school supplies and given to the nurses in the district who will distribute the bags to children in need, according to Rotary Club President Roseann Trevean.

Donations can be dropped off at in the Stop & Shop shopping center. Strathmore Cleaners is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

This is the fourth year the Rotary Club has collected backpacks and donated them to the Matawan Aberdeen Regional School District, according to Trevean.

The fundraiser has grown each year, Trevean said. The first year the Rotary Club set their goal at 50 backpacks; two years ago the goal was set at 70 backpacks and last year they upped the bar to 100 backpacks.

are kids in Matawan that poor?
Chelsea Naso (Editor) July 24, 2012 at 08:10 pm
Not all kids, but the student body comes from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds.

20 years of residence and not once has a child thanked us for all the property tax money we put into their education.

Did you ever go to each and every resident of the community you went to public school in and thank them for your education? How do you know that these children do not give thanks? have you attended every graduation and listened to them speak, or to school meetings, etc.? Do you have a child that has attended public school in Matawan/Aberdeen in the last 10-15 years or know of any and what is required to bring to school? Have you ever spoken to a teacher to find out just how much they pull out of their own pockets to help teach our children every year for supplies, since the school budget does not cover everything that is necessary?
