A Salute to Matawan Regional High School's Student Athletes

High school and Board of Education honors accomplishments of soccer, football and marching band

The Huskies have a lot to be proud of this year.

With a 13 wins, 8 losses and 1 tie, the Girls Soccer team propelled themselves to the title of Central Jersey Group Three State Sectional Champions - the furthest any Matawan soccer team has gone in the history of the school. The senior class' 35 career wins also made them the most successful class in the history of the school's soccer program.

The Football team charged forward and won the Central Jersey Group II championship game 3-0 over the top-seeded Rumson Bulldogs at Rutgers Stadium, who beat them in the very same game last season.

And no one can forget the Marching Band trumpeting and twirling their way to the honor of Atlantic Coastal Champions Group 2 Gold Medal Finalists, earning the highest score since 1995.

, in conjunction with the Board of Education, commemorated the students' accomplishments with the Salute to Champions program Wednesday night.

Congratulations were offered by Superintendent David Healy, Principal Michelle Ruscavage, Matawan Mayor Paul Buccellato and Aberdeen Mayor Fred Tagliarini.

Soccer Coach Ken McNab, Football Coach Joseph Martucci and Band Director Chris Hensel were all given a plaque memorializing the season.

Matawan Borough even declared Tuesday, Dec. 20 as Matawan Regional High School Day with a resolution passed at their regular action meeting Monday night.

"You did a marvelous job and you deserve to be commended. It takes a lot to be a student athlete," Aberdeen Councilwoman Wilhelmina Gumbs said.
