Tuition Credit Program Now Available for Matawan Firefighters

Firefighters and their immediate family members may qualify for up to $600 a year toward tuition.

Matawan's volunteer firefighters and their families can now qualify for up to $600 a year in tuition credits.

According to a resolution passed unanimously by the council on May 7, the borough hopes that participation in the state tuition credit program will help encourage people to step up as volunteers as well as retain current firefighters.

The volunteer tuition credit program is an incentive provided by the state of New Jersey to volunteer emergency responders and their immediate family members, such as a spouse or a dependent child.

The tuition credits can be used at county colleges, county vocational schools or county technical schools. Each volunteer is eligable to receive up to $600 per year toward an education.

Although the tuition credit program is not new, a municipality must pass a resolution approving their participation in it, according to the program's application.
