Still Time Left to Donate to County Food Drive

With less than a week to go in the month of April the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders is that has collected more than five tons of items for the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

The drive is being held in April which is also National County Government Month. This year's theme is "Healthy Counties, Healthy Families."

Freeholder Deputy Director John P. Curley said the drive has been a rousing success so far.

"We are so pleased with the generosity our residents have shown during this food drive," he said. "People who need food are not those who we traditionally think of as the poor. Today most people in need of assistance are formerly working, middle class families who lost their job or are underemployed."

All libraries that are part of the Monmouth County library system are main drop off points. Donations can be brought to the Holmdel, Hazlet and Marlboro libraries. For those residents who bring items for the drive to the library they will be able to wipe out any fines for overdue items. For every item donated the libraries will reduce fines by $2. There are also separate bins available for people making donations without seeking to have fines reduced.

Items can be brought to all 13 library branches as well as the Hall of Records in Freehold and the Agriculture and Human Services Building in Freehold Township.

Freeholder Lillian G. Burry said the libraries have played an important part in making the drive successful so far.

"I commend the staff at all of our library branches for taking on these extra duties and helping out with this worthwhile cause."
