The Matawan Borough Council will hold its August meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 7 instead of Tuesday, Aug. 6 to participate in Matawan Borough Police Department’s National Night Out.

The nationally organized event has been held for the past 30 years, involving more than 15,000 communities from all 50 states. Last year, the police department encouraged residents to turn on their exterior lights and come out on their front lawns, meet their neighbors and make a symbolic stand against crime between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

National Night Out began in 1984 as a way that residents can help prevent crime by joining with their neighbors to let criminals know they are fighting back. It is hoped that National Night Out will generate support for, and participation in, anti-crime programs such as Neighborhood Watch.
