Matawan Receives Municipal Aid for Road Reconstruction

The grant money will be used to reconstruct Monroe Street and Sunset Avenue

will receive $200,000 in state aid for the reconstruction of both Monroe Street and Sunset Avenue.

Last week, Gov. Chris Christie announced state aid grants under the Municipal Aid program, with 374 grants totaling $76,126,200. Another 10 Local Aid Infrastructure Fund grants worth $1,810,000 and three Safe Streets to Transit  grants worth $500,000 were also announced.

"I'm pleased that we were successful in this grant application," said Mayor Paul Buccellato.

The road reconstruction is still in the early stages of planning, Buccellato said. The project has yet to go to bid and there are currently no estimates for the total cost or the start date of construction.

The $200,000 will not cover the entire project, according to Buccellato, but it will help reduce the cost.

“New Jersey’s Local Aid program provides significant support to municipalities throughout the state,” said William G. Dressel Jr., executive director of the New Jersey League of Municipalities in a news release. “Now more than ever, alternate revenues other than property taxes are needed and appreciated by mayors and residents alike.”

Aberdeen Township also received an additional $6,815 in funding for the .
