District Gets $3,520 In Anti-Bullying Funding

Matawan-Aberdeen is one of 371 school districts that is being given funds to cover costs incurred under New Jersey's new anti-bullying law passed last year.

The Matawan-Aberdeen school district has been allocated $3,520 from the State Department of Education. The funds are part of meant to help New Jersey school districts pay for the rising costs of anti-bullying programs mandated by legislation passed last year.

The new anti-bullying law went into effect in September. According to the state website, this Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act is meant to "support the prevention, remediation and reporting" of HIB (Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying) in state schools. However, the State Council on Local Mandates ruled on January 27 of this year that the because it neglected to provide funding for districts to satisfy the new rules. The ruling would go into effect after 60 days if the state did not find this funding.

School districts had to apply for these financial awards no later than May 11, and according to a memo sent out to chief school administrators, applications had to include "justification for HIB prevention costs."

At $3,520 Matawan-Aberdeen ended up in the middle of the award amounts. Of the 24 Monmouth County districts that received funding, Howell received the highest amount with $14,606 and is the only district in the county to have been given more than $10,000 (Matawan-Aberdeen received the fifth-highest amount). Union Beach and Keyport Borough school districts are tied for the lowest funding received with $265 each.

In the state, the highest is the Camden City school district with $38,519, but the lowest is Haledon Borough School District in Passaic County with a mere $36. The entire award list can be viewed here.

I know that the superintendent and board presidentshould be reported as bullies. Maybe the district will spend this money on sending them for counseling...like they do with student bullies!

Bullying is a serious problem for all children involved. Kids who are bullied are more likely to feel bad about themselves and be depressed. They may fear or lose interest in going to school. Sometimes they take extreme measures, which can lead to tragic results. They may carry weapons, use violence to get revenge, or try to harm themselves. So as a concern parent, I would love to hear Schools who take bullying seriously by making sure that they have a strong law that deals about stopping bullying. Thus, I was searching a device that helps my child being protected even when they're inside the School and can automatically notify me and my family whenever emergency arise. I enrolled them in a safety-mobile application that allows them to alert us, speak to a Call Center for assistance and route the call to 911 with complete information. Through this application, my husband and I are now secured that they're safe. You can visit their site here: http://safekidzone.com/

Sorry Michelle but cell phone use is not allowed in elementary school. They can bring a cell phone to school but it must be registered in the office, completely turned off, and kept in their backpack in a locker or closet. No child is allowed to carry one in school so I am afraid your instant notification will not be so instant. Please encourage your child to go directly to a teacher, aide or administrator or even a trusted friend who will "tell". Encourage your child to remember specifics and to notice if there are witnesses in the area. I believe the anti-bullying programs ask students to list areas where bullying usually occurs and then these areas receive extra supervision. Unfortunately most bullying is now going to cell phones and internet. Please put your son's computer in a busy area in your house, not his bedroom, and check his text messages often. Most bullying is not immediately reported to parents because they don't want these devices taken away.
