Aberdeen Council Considering New Rules for Solicitors, Canvassers

Hours, licensing and "no knock" list in pair of introduced ordinances

Aberdeen has introduced stricter rules for door-to-door solicitation, and officials are considering a “no knock” list for residents who do not want to be bothered.

The Township Council introduced two ordinances at its regular meeting last week outlining when and how solicitors, canvassers and peddlers can operate.

Under the ordinances, anyone conducting door-to-door business can do so only between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday—such activities are prohibited on Sundays and legal holidays.

Concerns from residents prompted officials to reconsider the rules.

“There were some residents who called,” said Township Clerk Karen Ventura. “This way they can feel comfortable.”

The ordinances also establish a licensing procedure and require that solicitors, canvassers and peddlers wear a badge including their license number.

Residents will have the opportunity to sign up on a township-maintained “no knock” list under the ordinances, which will be enforced by the police department.

A final vote and public hearing on the ordinances will be held on Dec. 3.
