Two Car Accident at Church Street and South Atlantic Avenue in Aberdeen

Two car accident Thursday morning slows traffic in area. One driver was extricated from his vehicle.

Police were seen directing traffic at the intersection of Church Street and South Atlantic Avenue in Aberdeen after a two-car accident at 9:14 Thursday morning.

During the accident, a red sedan jumped the curb in front of a South Atlantic home, crossed the front lawn, and crashed into a tree. The driver had to be extricated from his vehicle by the Aberdeen Township Fire Department. The Matawan First Aid Squad helped remove the driver from his vehicle on a back board, placed him in an ambulance and brought him to an area hospital.

The driver of the other car involved, a silver hatchback, was also brought to an area hospital by South Aberdeen EMS.

Rachel Gumbs, of 601 South Atlantic Avenue, was gardening in a flower patch on her front lawn near the intersection just moments before the red sedan came careening across her property.

"She stopped by and we went in the house," said Gumbs, referring to  childhood friend Irene Jones who came over for the first time in several years. "As soon as we went inside and sat down, BOOM."

"If she hadn't of come over..." Gumbs said, trailing off and walking toward the tire tracks on her front lawn. "I was right there gardening in the flowers."

No information regarding the identity or condition of both drivers or what caused the accident was available.

Aberdeen Township Police, Aberdeen Township Fire Department, South Aberdeen EMS, and the Matawan First Aid Squad all responded to the scene.

Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.

Our best wishes go out to the families of those injured this accident. Clearly our busy roads pose a hazard for residents and drivers alike.

Looks very serious, I hope everyone is recovering well.
And a quick note to Mrs. Gumbs: Every year I admire your flowers around the tree. Never knew who lived there, but always thought what a beautiful job they (you!) did with the landscaping. Glad you were safely away from the accident.
