Train Trestle Truck Hit Won't Impact Rail Service

Trains on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor won't be majorly delayed, authorities said, after a tractor trailer sustained heavy damage attempting to cross under a bridge in South Brunswick.

A tractor trailer carrying water struck a train bridge in South Brunswick, causing fears that train traffic up and down Amtrak's Northeast Corridor might be disrupted. Amtrak does not run through the Matawan-Aberdeen train station, but it does go through Metropark station, a major transit hub in Woodbridge.

The accident briefly delayed trains traveling on the northeast corridor, as there were concerns about the structural integrity of the bridge. However, there have been no major delays. Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole said engineers finished examining the damage at about 1:30 p.m. and reported no issues.

The halted train traffic, though, hasn't affected NJ Transit trains on the North Jersey Coast Line, which passes through from shore points to join the main train line in Rahway.

"There is no impact on NJ Transit rail service as a result of the bridge strike," said NJ Transit spokesman John Durso in a statement.

The incident occurred at about 12:15 p.m., when the truck driver was headed down Deans Lane from Route 1 in South Brunswick and made it about three-fourths of the way under the bridge crossing, according to police.

South Brunswick Police spokesman Sgt. Jim Ryan said Amtrak officials are en route to inspect the damage.

Police are on scene and traffic is being diverted at Georges Road and Blackhorse Lane. Sgt. Ryan said the roadway will be closed for at least the next two hours.

The accident is expected to delay trains traveling on the Northeast Corridor for the next few hours.
