Middlesex Teens Killed in Crash to Be Buried Next to Each Other

Nicole Surace and Jeffrey Szatkowski died in a motor vehicle crash on Dutch Road Saturday.

Teenage sweethearts Nicole Surace and Jeffrey Szatkowski Jr. were joined together in life, and will remain so after their deaths in a tragic accident last weekend.

Surace, of Milltown, and Szatkowski, of Spotswood, were killed Saturday in a motor vehicle accident on Dutch Road in East Brunswick. The couple will be buried next to each other, according to Szatkowski's obituary from the Brunswick Memorial Home.

Shortly before 8 p.m. on Nov. 30, a 2004 Ford Mustang driven by Szatkowski was headed south on Dutch Road near Fresh Ponds Road, when his vehicle ran off the roadway and crashed into a telephone pole, according to police. After striking the pole, the Mustang then turned over in a wooded area and collided with a tree before landing on its roof.

Szatkowski and Surace were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where both were later pronounced dead, according to police.

Surace was a freshman at Monmouth University, while Szatkowski was a senior at Spotswood High School.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of these two young people during this very difficult time," said Spotswood Superintendent of Schools Scott R. Rocco in a statement on the district's web site.

The district established counseling services and resources to students and staff throughout by members of the Traumatic Loss Coalitions for Youth Program from Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care, along with the Crisis Response Team and several counselors from surrounding school districts.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at The Brunswick Memorial Home, located at 454 Cranbury Road in East Brunswick. Following the service, Szatkowski will be laid to rest next to Surace at the Holy Cross Burial Park on Cranbury Road in South Brunswick. The viewing will be held on Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
