Stolen Matawan Speed Sign Returned

Sign was stolen earlier in December

It's an early Christmas present for Matawan.

The borough's police department announced Sunday night that the speed sign stolen from Beechwood Terrace around Dec. 7 has been recovered.

"Kudos to Officer Chris Stark for recovering our missing sign," the department wrote on its Facebook page. "Also thanks to 'someone' for leaving it where we could find it."

No charges were announced in connection with the missing sign. Shortly after the sign went missing Chief Jason Gallo said it could be returned, no questions asked.

“It would be a good holiday gift to the town,” he said at the time. “But, if we catch you first, the deal’s off.”

The cost of the sign is $300, mostly because of the rubber base, the department said. The department has three other signs, which were removed from roadways by the town during recent snow plowing operations.

Facebook commenter Kevin Bedy wrote that he was happy to read the sign was returned.

"They were helping while they were there," he said.
