Ravine Drive Crash on Thanksgiving Eve Yields Assault by Auto Indictment

Three people were injured in the accident on Ravine Drive in Matawan on Nov. 21.

A Monmouth County grand jury voted to indict a Matawan man on two charges stemming from a Thanksgiving eve accident on Ravine Drive, according to court documents.

Police say that shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 21, a sedan was traveling on Ravine Drive toward the elementary school and a mid-sized SUV traveling on Ravine Drive toward Main Street collided where the road bends in front of Lake Lefferts.

The driver of the sedan, identified as Burt Hwang, 42, of Matawan, suffered severe injuries and was flown by helicopter to Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, according to police. The male and female occupants of the SUV suffered less severe injuries and were transported by ambulance to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

As a result of the accident, Burt Hwang was indicted on two counts of fourth degree assault by auto for the injuries sustained by the occupants of the SUV. According to the indictment, Hwang was "driving recklessly."

An indictment does not indicate a conviction, only that a Monmouth County grand jury voted there was enough evidence to proceed with a trial.
