Minor Water Main Break Repaired Overnight in Strathmore's "J" Section

Crews worked throughout the early hours Thursday to repair a crack in the water main

A minor water main break was repaired on Juniper Place in the Strathmore section of Aberdeen Township by American Water early Thursday morning.

According to Aberdeen Chief of Police John Powers, the police department responded to a call about a water main break in the "J" section Wednesday evening. At about 5:35 p.m., American Water was on the scene and began working to repair it, Powers said.

Residents in the immediate area may have experienced a decrease in water pressure or a loss of water overnight, according to American Water Communications and External Affairs Director Peter Eschbach.

The cement water pipe was repaired at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning,  Eschbach said. At about 4:30 a.m., the crew returned to fill the area around the water main with soil and cover it with a temporary asphalt patch. The next step is for the area of road above the water main to be resurfaced with a more permanent material, Eschbach said.

Eschbach explained that leaks like this are not unusual in older communities.

"That pipe was probably put in back in the 1950s. We're at that time of year that as the ground is warming, things are shifting. Pipes can spring a leak," Eschbach said. "It's an example of how old the street's infrastructure is and why we're working to maintain it and replace as much as we can as quick as we can."
