Matawan Resident Flips Car in Holmdel, Charged with DWI

Police said the 5 a.m. crash would cause delays on several roads Sunday.

An 18-year-old Matawan resident was arrested early this morning in Holmdel, after striking a traffic light and flipping his car.

Daniel Behr, 18 of Matawan was allegedly driving drunk around 5 a.m. when he lost control of his car at the intersection of Everrett, Red Hill, Middletown and Crawfords Corner Roads.

Behr's Chevy Impala struck a traffic signal, rolled several times, and came to a stop upright according to police. Behr was wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured, no other cars were involved.

Behr was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

The traffic signal remains down as of 11 a.m. on Sunday. The Monmouth County Highway Department is on scene repairing the signal and a detour to American Way has been posted. Expect delays and a detour until approximately 2 p.m.

How do we impress upon people like this that this is NOT ACCEPTABLE. He was arrested, will be out on bail, and probably have a suspended license for a short time. We are all fortunate that he didn't hurt anyone else. I'm thinking no license for at least a year. That will help him and others understand the potential danger he is.

He is also going to have a problem with underage drinking, and IF he still had a provisional license, he will lose it a long time! He also will have to make restitution on ALL the damages! damn kids anymore!

I'm with you Karen, with one exception. Seeing as the legal drinking age is 21, let him be without his license until he is 21.

I agree. There needs to be much harsher consequences. This should not be acceptable, but it seems as though most people just get a slap on the wrist. Way too many people die from drunk driving, and it's usually the innocent people!

my car was hit by a DUI while parked in front of my house on May 31, then I read in the paper he was arrested the day before at a seatbelt stop in a school zone with all kind of drugs on him and released on 10k bail! IF he had not made that 10k bail my car wouldn't be trashed! Thankfully no one was standing near my car we were in front of the house though!

Dans a great kid and he didn't deserve any of this to happen to him, he's a good friend of mine and it breaks my heart to hear this

He didn't "deserve" this? He made a couple of bad choices. He 'chose' to drink while underage to the point of inebriation and then he 'chose' to drive drunk. He's lucky he didn't kill anyone. If he's such a great kid as you say he won't do this again. No one is infallible, not even an 18 year old.
