Matawan Man Charged with Five Borough Burglaries

The accused allegedly also burglarized businesses in Middletown and Old Bridge.

A local man is accused of multiple smash-and-grab burglaries of businesses in Matawan, Middletown and Old Bridge.

Borough Police say Mario Castellano, 48, of Matawan broke in and stole cash from Millennium Nails, Loving Hut, Wine Nation, Siam Smiles and General Plumbing Supply.

According to Lt. Ben Smith, the first burglary took place on July 12 and a couple thousand in cash was stolen over the course of the summer in Matawan.

Detective Joseph Lovallo identified Castellano as a suspect using surveillance video from the businesses, Smith said. Lovallo arrested Castellano on Aug. 28 and charged him with five counts each of burglary, theft and criminal mischief.

"He has an extensive criminal history in burglary and theft," Smith said.

On Aug. 29, Middletown Police also charged Castellano with burglary, theft, and criminal mischief, according to a township press release.

According to Smith, Castellano is also believed to be responsible for several similar burglaries in Old Bridge.
