Matawan Man Arrested for Allegedly Assaulting a Police Officer

Police say the situation escalated while responding to a domestic disturbance

A Matawan man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a Matawan Police Officer, according to Lt. Ben Smith.

Smith said Sgt. Patrick Walker, Patrolman Sean McCabe and Patrolman Ryan Murphy responded to the home of Joseph Kristoff, Jr., 60, for a domestic dispute on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at about 5:30 p.m.

According to police, when the officers arrived Kristoff, Jr. was in a verbal dispute with his son, Joseph Kristoff III, who also lives at the Matawan residence. Officers observed that Kristoff, Jr. was intoxicated, Smith said, and called the Matawan First Aid Squad to transport him to Bayshore Community Hospital.

When the officers attempted to escort Kristoff, Jr. to the ambulance, police say that Kristoff, Jr. became "verbally combative and confrontational" and begain flailing his arms and attempting to punch the officers.

Kristoff, Jr. allegedly assaulted Sgt. Walker, and while police were arresting Kristoff, Jr., he attempted to kick the arresting officers, Smith said.

He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and one count of resisting arrest. Kristoff, Jr. was transported to Monmouth County Jail. Bail was set at $10,000 with no ten percent option.
