Flooding Closes Route 35 Between Cliffwood Avenue and County Road in Aberdeen

Heavy rain has, yet again, closed the section of highway, according to police.

Route 35 between Cliffwood Avenue and County Road is closed in both directions due to flooding caused by heavy rain in the area, according to Aberdeen Police Chief John Powers.

There is a detour however drivers are cautioned to avoid the area if possible.

The section of highway is extremely prone to flooding because of its proximity to Long Neck Creek and Whale Creek.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced plans in March 2013 to begin a safety improvement and congestion relief project along a 1.25 mile stretch of Route 35 between Greenwood Avenue and Prospect Avenue.

The $15.7 million project will raise the level of Route 35 by as much as four feet, with the highest increases in elevation at the culverts of each creek. Culverts are open drains that allow water to flow under a roadway. The project also includes replacing the drainage pipes with larger culverts to minimize tidal flooding.
