Aberdeen Fire Department Brings House Fire Quickly Under Control Thursday Night

A fire started in the attic of a home on Bechstein Drive, officials say.

The Aberdeen Township Fire Department responded to a house fire at the corner of South Atlantic Avenue and Bechstein Drive shortly after 7 last night.

The home was one of the thousands without power in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and had been using their fire place for heat, according to Aberdeen Fire Dist. No. 1 Chief Gary Bellone.

"The fire was in the area of the chimney, in the attic near the roof," said Bellone, who explained that a fire in the attic of a home can spread very quickly.

Firefighters had to remove a portion of the ceiling in the bedroom to access the fire, which was put about at about 7:45, according to Bellone.

"The main damage to the house was upstairs in the bedroom and in the living room below there was water damage. There was also smoke damage throughout the house," he said.

The family was displaced but was put in contact with the Red Cross.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
