What Pieces of Land Would You Like to See as Open Space?

Applications are being accepted from municipalities in Monmouth County. What should Matawan and Aberdeen apply for?

The annual open space grant applications in Monmouth County are about to be reviewed by the Board of Chosen Freeholders, as municipalities compete for a portion of the allotted $2 million.

The deadline for submitting a matching fund grant application is Sept. 18 and the winners will be announced in December, funded through the Monmouth County Open Space Trust Fund.

“The freeholders are proud to be a part of successful municipal park projects,” said Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone. “In the first ten years of the program, 46 towns have participated in 132 different projects.”

In June 2012, Aberdeen Township was able to purchase over 20 acres of land near the Old Bridge border that will be preserved as a passive recreation park using a $250,000 grant from Monmouth County's Open Space Funds.

What other pieces of land would Matawan and Aberdeen residents prefer to preserve?

It's time that Conaskonk Point in Union Beach was acquired from JCP&L...and also the parcel that the BRSA recently from JCP&L via Eminent Domaine...and converted to Green Acres parkland. This was the plan years ago and was a promise that was never fulfilled. Conaskonk Point is a crucial wetlands area. Many threatened and endangered birds use it as a migratory and breeding ground, as it is one of the few wetland areas on Raritan Bay left. Eagles and Osprey are often seen there...red knots too. I've seen foxes there several times. The Audubon Society has a wonderful webpage for it: http://www.njaudubon.org/SectionCenters/SectionSHBO/ConaskonkPoint.aspx Also, check out Bob Devlin's sublime bird photographs on Conaskonk: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ndcsbd1/sets/72157600004658841/ Many of these birds will die if the BRSA gets to build their 386-foot industrial wind turbine with blades each the size of a cell tower there. It would be a crime...literally.

200+ acres of Freneau Woods aka Aberdeen Forge comprising woods, former farms, ravines and the uplands of Matawan Brook and the undeveloped end of Lake Lefferts. Thanks

Monmouth Freeholders should fund completion of the Hudson Trail through Aberdeen-Matawan before buying land. And they ought to fund painting and repairs to Burrowes Mansion. If you're prioritizing needs, those come first around here. The Freneau open spaces are a great addition now there are more pressing matters.

Freneau woods would be a great acquisition. The 200+ acres encompass the headwaters of Matawan Creek, the area could also be used as a future potable water supply.
