Monmouth County to Buy 68 Acres for Proposed Marlboro-Aberdeen Park

The land will be preserved in its natural state, officials say.

The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders approved a resolution to acquire land for $2.9 million for a proposed park in Aberdeen and Morganville in Marlboro Township.

The resolution, approved last Thursday, authorized the sale of seven lots from the Estate of Eugene Fariello to the county. The parcel contains approximately 68.19 acres.

The purchase was in the amount of $2,930,000, which is subject to adjustments for acreage, taxes or other closing costs.

The land sold includes one lot in Aberdeen Township and six lots in Marlboro Township. The property borders Marlboro and Aberdeen Townships. Greenwood and Ticetown Roads in Marlboro Township run through three of the blocks.

In  near the Old Bridge border, Township Manager Holly Reycraft previously said. The Greenwood Road property consists of old farm land, known as the Hauser farm, and woods which the township plans to preserve.

According to Reycraft, the township is hoping that the Greenwood parcel will also become part of a Monmouth County Park. Although it "looks likely," it is not yet official.

The 68.19-acre acquisition was deemed “necessary and advisable” by the Monmouth County Board of Recreation Commissioners as to preserve certain lands and property for County open space preservation, natural resources conservation and public park and recreation purposes.

That land, which is a priority for protection due to its location in the headwaters area for the Matawan Creek, will be a passive recreation park, left in its natural state.
