Two Injured in Serious Parkway Accident in Hazlet Sunday Morning

Medevac helicopter summoned for front seat passenger

Two people were injured when their tan Nissan Maxima left the northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway and hit a tree, a milepost 118 in Hazlet, according to state police.

The car hit the tree between the Express and Local lanes and caught on fire. Police were alerted at 7:27 a.m. Sunday, July 31 to the accident.  

Driver Lamont Spates, 45, of Irvington was treated for a dislocated shoulder at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, The passenger, who police declined to name, was flown by helicopter to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital’s trauma center.

An unknown Good Samaritan pulled the victims from the car, which caught on fire, said State Trooper Tara Parsell.

The roadway was cleared by 10 a.m., police said.

Responding to the incident was Holmdel Fire & Rescue Co. Number Two, Hazlet Fire Company Number One, three Holmdel First Aid ambulance and one Hazlet First Aid ambulance, said Chief John Boyle Sr. of the Holmdel Fire squad.
