Hot Weather Prompts Call to Save Water

Monmouth County residents have been asked to reduce water usage

The high temperatures combined with the promise of more dry, hot weather to come has prompted New Jersey American Water to encourage efficient outdoor water usage, according to a release from the company.

Monmouth County customers can voluntarily save water by watering their lawn or garden less often and at specific times of day to minimize evaporation.

New Jersey American Water suggests using an odd/even schedule, which means if your house number is odd only water your lawn or garden on an odd day of the month. They also encourage that watering take place between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. or between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to minimize evaporation.

These suggestions do not apply to new sod or newly seeded lawns, however it is encouraged that new sod or seed that has not been planted be postponed until fall. The suggestions also do not apply to private wells for lawn irrigation and commercial uses of water outdoors.

At this time, following the suggestions is voluntary. If water demand continues to increase or the water supply significantly decreases, stricter water restrictions may be put in place, the release said.
