Hey, What Happened to Kat Shack in Matawan?

The local bar recently announced that they have shut their doors for an undetermined about of time.

Kat Shack Bar & Grill will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time, according to a post Monday on the Main Street bar's Facebook page.

The announcement came only two days after the establishment told Facebook fans they would be closed for the weekend. Over 25 people commented on the status, with the majority asking why Kat Shack closed their doors and when they plan to reopen. So far, their questions have gone unanswered.

Kat Shack is a popular local bar that features regular live music, drink specials and brick oven pizza on the edge of downtown Matawan.

According to New Jersey property tax records, the commercial property at 254 Main Street was last purchased in 2009 for $295,000 by First Star Properties, L.L.C. of Keyport.

Attempts by Patch to reach the business owner in person, by phone and via social media have been unsuccessful so far.

Tell us: Were you a frequent Kat Shack patron? What will you miss most about the bar while it is closed?

That place was so depressing. Every time I peeked in the doors I was greeted by a scene of 60 year old and older men, slumped, depressingly, over the bar, on their stools. As a man in his mid thirties, living right where 79 meets 34, with two children, looking for an occasional local date night hang out, I can honestly say that I would have never gone back anyway.

I live nearby, and won't miss the late- night drunken yelling outdoors.

I heard (from some patrons who frequented the Shack) that the owner had to short-sell it very suddenly. Don't know any specifics, or if someone has purchased it, otherwise.

Just moved to Aberdeen and found the Shack one night out looking for a bar nearby. Really good service, food was great. Bartenders always attentive to your drinks. Usually a good crowd. Played pool on Wed nights regularly. Local bands were pretty good as well. Hope they re- open soon

Maloney's is far superior in drinks, food, and atmosphere. Hopefully they'll get the business.

I went to Maloney's and was seated at 7:30 pm and finally had our dinner served at 9:10 pm. My party and I all had to get up from our table and go to the bar and get drinks or flag a hostess. The service was horrible and we'd never go back. Kat Shack was very attentive when I went there.

Maloney's provides he worst service possible. It's almost as if they try to disappoint you! The beer selection is great...buy it ends there as the owners are just as clueless as the servers!

Good place!! Bar Maids are awesome and can SING!! good service, live bands are great. Food is above standard!! Never waited for a drink in here. Friendly place with no worries, I always felt comfortable in there. Ball teams always welcome and treated RIGHT.

I found this place with a friend this past winter and have frequented the place once every 3-4 weeks on Friday or Saturday night and we liked the place - a lot - and we're sad to hear of it's closing. We drove by one night, heard live music and went in to check it out and found the people, from patrons to barmaids to be friendly, real and there to have fun.dance and/or listen to good ol' live rock and roll with the house band - which the Matawan/Old Bridge area sorely lacks. The barmaids at the Shack were friendly, personable on top of things and never had us waiting. While we were outsiders to the regulars, we never felt like outsiders and would hang, talk to some of the patrons, play darts or pool while listening to music from the band or jukebox that was rock oriented and more to our liking. When we went to go to the Shack to drink only to discover it was closed we did venture into Maloney'ss but the atmosphere / ambiance was just not there -- the eclectic drink list was impressive, drink prices high and did like the Soho or Starbucks type of music being played (Joe Jackson, early REM, Elvis Costello) but something was missing from Maloneys - perhaps Maloney's lacked intimacy, the bartenders less welcoming/friendly, or the crowd. Anyway the Kat Shack will be missed and so far has not been an easy establishment to replace (went to Teddy's and Ale House this Saturday and Kat Shack wins hands). I hope the Shack reopens, and soon.

I really like this place. My best buddy and I get out of work early on Fridays and every week we would meet up at Kat Shack for beers. Very comfortable atmosphere. Not the most happening younger joint (we are both in our late 20's) but that's just fine by us. Good place to relax and get a little drunk, or really drunk if you're so inclined. Solid food as well. We will miss the Shack and I hope it reopens soon. I might buy the damn thing if it goes up for sale! Oh, and Maloney's sucks. Go to Court Jester or Brass Rail instead.

Just went past and there is sign up that says they are hiring for all positions so hopefully it will be opening back up soon. Liked going there cause it is in walking distance. I thought it was a good crowd of mixed ages and races. I think those that didn't like it really didn't give the place a chance.

I was just chatting with a friend today who was wondering when or if Kat Shack would re-open. The topic was what places in town could you go to after work and get a couple of plain cheese slices and ice cold beer. We wracked our brains for a bit and my buddy said "Kat Shack"! I didn't enjoy the limited parking, but the food and service was great. (TIP: If you are sitting at the street end of the bar, watch out for the dart board - there's not much space for misses.)
