Dollar Express in Matawan to Close Its Doors

Owner, who is from Holmdel, will pursue business venture further south.

on Main Street in Matawan will close its doors for good shortly after Christmas.

Eileen Gendus, a Holmdel resident who has owned the dollar store at 147 Main Street for two and a half years, decided to sell the store and pursue another retail venture.

Gendus said that her decision to close has nothing to do with the economy, and everything to do with an estate sales store she is in the process of opening further south.

"Unfortunately, I can't be in two places at once," Gendus said.

Prior to the Dollar Express, another dollar store occupied the space for about five years, according to Gendus. Before that, there was a drug store on the site. She is hoping that someone will open another dollar store in her location to ensure that products remain available at a low price for local shoppers.

"The community is in dire need for a store like this," Gendus said. "It's a store that serves the community; it's a need for the community."

Gendus said she almost sold the store, but just hours before the closing the buyer backed out.

Even though she has not yet found another business to take over the property, she still plans to move forward with her estate sales business. Once Christmas passes, Gendus said she will finish packing up and will close the store for the final time.
