Sinkhole Closes Aberdeen Road Bridge Over Matawan Creek

Traffic will be detoured until necessary repairs can be made.

The bridge on Aberdeen Road over Matawan Creek is closed in “the interest of public safety,” according to a Monmouth County press release.

Traffic between Main Street and Matawan Avenue will be diverted until necessary repairs are made. Only local traffic will be permitted to drive on Aberdeen Road, according to the County. Drivers are asked to follow the detour signs posted in the area.

As of 5 p.m., Monmouth County Public Works and Engineering crews are working to assess the extent of a sinkhole and are evaluating repair options, according to the County.

The bridge will remain closed until necessary repairs are made.

“County crews will be working through the night with the intention of reopening the busy thoroughfare by the morning rush hour,” Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone said in the release. “The county understands the inconvenience that this closure will have on the motoring public in the area. Our first concern is for the safety of the travelling public and the county will work to get the road reopened as quickly as possible.”
