To Veg or not to Veg?

A young mom and her daughter stopped by the store the other day for a wing clipping and general check up for the family Budgie, asking me about alternative foods they might provide for Dino their Parakeet. Dino is a fussy eater preferring Millet and our organic seed blend. His diet is fine, but is heavy in protein and needs to be more varied. I suggested that Dino get more fruit and veggies this can be done quite easily by using available fruit and frozen mixed veggies. When offering these types of food, less is more, defrost a small cup of veggies in hot water mix with fruit. ie; apple, pear, banana, craisins . We also use a diced fruit mix provided by Abba Products which is small and diced for small birds, I place a small amount in the food processor and pulse twice which chops them into small slivers and chips to add to the fruit and veggie mix. Remember to remove all seed products for a period of three to four hours when offing alternative foods such as fresh or pelleted food. Till next time Happy Birding, Walt
