Cliffwood VFW Announces Essay and Speech Contest Winners

The local winners of the Patriot Pen and the Voice of Democracy will be honored at the VFW in February.

The Cliffwood Guadalcanal VFW Post 4745 in Aberdeen Township announced its local winners of the Patriot's Pen essay contest and the Voice of Democracy speech contest.

Middle school students entering the Patriot Pen contest were challenged with answering the question, "What would you tell the Founding Fathers?" using their own experiences. Judging criteria was based on three categories - knowledge of the theme, theme development and clarity of ideas.

Locally, Marielle Abel placed first, Veronica Shafik placed second, Kasey McFadden placed third and Amerita Khaira earned an honorable mention.

High school students who entered the Voice of Democracy contest were challenged with answering, "Is our constitution still relevant today?" in the form of a speech. Judging criteria was based on originality, content and delivery.

Locally, Sabrina Laverty placed first, Sean Aitken placed second and Samantha Hymowitz placed third. Laverty is also the winner of VFW District 6 and will advance to the VFW NJ State Finals this month.

The students as well as their families and teachers will be invited to a recognition event at Post 4745 in February.
