Revitalization and clean-up of Main Street in Matawan is high on the list.

On Tuesday we asked Matawan-Aberdeen Patch Facebook readers to comment on "It's a new year, and a chance for improvements. What changes do you want to see in town?"

Here is what they said:

  • New businesses on Main Street.
  • Less crime.
  • Pedestrian walk sign across the Matawan Borough and limit trucks crossing on Broad Street residential area.
  • New businesses, please.
  • Turn Main Street into a nice welcoming street. It looks like a ghost town.
  • I want them to pick my leaves up from October!
  • Main Street looks like crap, sidewalks are a mess with weeds and trash.
  • Main Street. I'd like to see Patch do an interview with the mayor on why Main Street is in such terrible shape and what plans does he have to fix it. If he has a plan, which I'm assuming he doesn't.
  • A revitalization of Main Street would be nice. Also more community based activity in the warmer weather. As for crimes, is it really that high? If so maybe developing an auxiliary police officer program. No firearms but power to arrest and an asp or baton for defense.
  • Less construction on Rt 35 in Cliffwood/Cliffwood Beach.
  • Fix the streets. Every road you travel on is full of potholes.

I grew up in Matawan and am sad to hear that Main Street is not how I remember it. Would love to see the 'quaint-ness' of Main Street return.

Enforce stop sign laws, especially on the street on which the library is located. A pedestrian CANNOT see approaching vehicles, until the pedestrian actually steps onto the pedestrian crossing. Vehicles stop, at the line of parked cars, instead of the Stop Sign line. Twice, I almost was hit by vehicles which did not stop. Have an officer standing in the lobby of the HQ, indoors. I'll bet hundreds of violations would be noticed. Also, REMOVE the snow, from downtown, so that people don't have to climb over glaciers, to cross a street.

Realize that Morganville is your neighboring town and is going to see a lot of development over the next several years. Route 79 and Tennent Roads will soon have a Quick Check - something I believe Matawan/Aberdeen voted no to years ago. We MUST fight together to preserve this part of town! "Northpointe" on Lloyd Road off Nolan Road is just a 'vote' away in Marlboro... Get involved before it's too late!

Since our taxes are paying for everything in this town we need to get Main street looking like Freehold's main street ! Have the streets (Fierro )Filled in with blacktop then sealed over with Tar and done properly not run it over with there Tires and stand around looking at it and have all the rocks kick up and scratch peoples car . The crack separate the road and is a big whole going down the entire street and its never fixed properly . Have the snow plows Plow the snow on the townships property since they don't take care of it anyhow and clean it up like the leaves, branches (Annmar ) and stop putting it back on our property after we all shovel it away . Enforce the CURB YOUR DOG RULES AND START GIVING PEOPLE FINES & Have the police patrol the area's more instead of sitting at MJ's and Talking all the time ! This is what my tax dollars should be going towards ! If No one wants to work for a living then they need to Get fired and give someone who is willing to work the job. Tired of lazy people collecting a paycheck and not doing anything for it .

I would love to see Main Street and the train station revitalized, but even on a smaller scale - fix the roads so people don't damage tires and fix the bad sidewalks. The sidewalks are so bad and broken up on my street that it is more dangerous for the kids to ride bikes on the sidewalk than the street! That is ridiculous and a safety concern. We pay enough taxes - fix the sidewalks. I would also like to see something done about the illegal workers hanging out around Quick Check and the train. This is also a safety concern! I am sick of walking by and overhearing inappropriate comments directed at people in Spanish! I get nervous to walk my children down Main Street!
